In North Carolina, it is mandatory that all motorcycle operators and passengers must wear a helmet. In South Carolina, and 18 other states, only individuals under the age of 21 must wear head protection.

While the nation has seen record low numbers of fatal accidents involving passenger cars and light duty trucks, unfortunately, the same cannot be said about motorcycle accidents. Biker fatalities continued their 11-year increase, reaching 5,290 in 2008; that’s nearly 14% of all fatal accidents reported in the U.S.
